Put Safety to Work with the Freightliner 114SD Plus
Freightliner Safety
Safety on the Jobsite
When there's serious work that needs to be done, safety can't be an afterthought. Operators who are climbing in and out of the cab all day, backing into busy yards, or hauling equipment across unsteady ground need a truck that provides both power and protection. With the Freightliner 114SD Plus, safety features are ready to help from the moment the crew starts the truck until they park it at the end of the day.
Safety on the Move: Getting To & From the Jobsite
When going to and from the jobsite, potential hazards can be around any corner. The Freightliner 114SD Plus has the operator’s back through every lane change, surprise slowdown, and work zone they navigate. The Detroit Assurance® Suite of Safety Systems with Active Brake Assist 5 (ABA5) helps to mitigate risk with these standout features:
- Fused radars and camera technology monitor the road, issuing visual and audio warnings when they detect vehicles close ahead or pedestrians stepping into the truck’s path. If the operator doesn’t respond, ABA5 escalates to partial braking and, if needed, full braking to help mitigate collisions.
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps maintain safe distances, automatically slowing with the traffic flow. For trucks that have a full Detroit Powertrain with an integrated engine and transmission, ACC can slow to 0 mph.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW) detects visible lane markings and alerts operators with a dash warning and rumbling sound when the truck veers from its lane without signaling first. This is especially helpful during long stretches of highway or on backroads leading to remote sites.
- Tailgate Warning alerts operators to reduce the truck’s speed to maintain a safe following distance. If the truck follows too closely for 10 seconds or more, the system activates visual and audible alerts. These alerts turn off once the truck slows below 20 mph. If the truck does not reduce speed within 10 seconds, the incident is reported to the operator’s telematics system. This standard feature guides the operator until the truck is traveling at a safer speed.

Additionally, the design of the 114SD Plus is purpose-built for enhanced operator awareness:
- A 2,500-square-inch windshield offers a wide, clear field of view up front, reducing blind spots.
- Splayed frame rails, a sloped hood, and an up-to-50° wheel cut work together to give operators better visibility and tighter maneuverability. These design features help operators navigate narrow streets and crowded urban jobsites more safely and efficiently.
- A factory-installed backup camera (standard) assists in rear visibility when backing out of lots or yards.
- An optional 4-camera system gives even more visibility around the truck for increased safety.
Safety Scenario - On the Road in the 114SD Plus
At the beginning of the day, a utility crew heads out in the 114SD Plus, traveling to a remote worksite. On the highway, Adaptive Cruise Control helps the operator keep a steady, safe distance in changing stop-and-go traffic, while Lane Departure Warning sends alerts during an unintentional lane crossing. As the crew turns onto a narrow access road, the truck’s wide windshield and sloped hood provide clear views of the workers and equipment ahead. Getting to the site safely is only the first part of the job. And when it’s time for the crew to head out, the 114SD Plus will help the operator stay confident and in control all the way back.
Safety at Work: On the Jobsite
The environment on the jobsite is drastically different than the highway, and the 114SD Plus is equipped to go safely from one to the next. Now, there are tight quarters, workers walking around, uneven ground, backing maneuvers, and active equipment nearby. This is where purpose-built safety features really kick in.
- The Detroit Assurance Suite of Safety Systems detects stationary vehicles and moving pedestrians. The system watches for pedestrians and moving or stationary vehicles, applying warnings or braking even when visibility is compromised.
- The optional Side Guard Assist (SGA) monitors the passenger-side blind spots and alerts the operator to objects or people in that zone. This is critical when backing up near crew members or structures.
- The 114SD Plus’s step design with low step heights and LED lighting helps reduce slip/fall risks when operators are frequently climbing in and out of the cab.
- The QuickFit™ Electrical System helps avoid field wiring errors or ad hoc splices that can introduce electrical hazards. Clean, well-labeled connectors reduce confusion when integrating jobsite tools or upfits. And with built-in features like the automatic tarp, tailgate latch, and speed-specific strobe lighting, owners and operators have many tools that help them keep equipment protected.
- Detroit powertrain with the DT12® Vocational Transmission contributes to smoother maneuvers and safer jobsite operations:
- Hill Start Aid prevents rollback on grades up to 3%, common in jobsite access zones or embankments.
- Rock-Free Mode helps the truck get unstuck from soft soil, and Off-Road Mode helps optimize shifting for peak performance in any terrain.
- Paver Mode allows shifting from neutral to drive without pressing the brake. This is especially helpful in paving operations or when synchronizing movement with other equipment.
Safety Scenario - Navigating a Busy Quarry Site
A 114SD Plus upfitted for dump-truck duty begins its morning hauling, taking heavy material from the quarry floor up to the stock yard. The work is demanding, requiring repeated trips across rough terrain, shifting ground, and areas of low visibility.
As the operator approaches a tight drop zone, the truck’s backup camera helps guide the vehicle safely into position. Once the body is raised to dump, QuickFit upfit programming adds another layer of protection: when the tarp is opened, and the truck is moving under 10 mph, the strobe lights activate automatically, improving visibility for nearby crew in dusty or low-contrast conditions. After the load is released, the operator begins to drive forward. As a worker unexpectedly steps into the truck’s path, ABA5 responds with warnings and partial braking, then applies full braking when additional support is needed.
Preparing for the next load is streamlined as well. With the single press of a button, QuickFit lowers the high-lift body, latches the tailgate, and deploys the tarp, reducing task time and helping prevent operator error. Throughout the day, the operator climbs in and out of the cab to check loads and confirm placement. The 114SD Plus supports that routine with low step height, well-positioned grab handles, and illuminated entry points to help prevent slips on muddy boots.
Throughout a constantly shifting quarry environment, the 114SD Plus’s design and integrated safety systems help keep the operator and the crew protected and productive.
The Fleet Owner Perspective: Liability, Responsibility, & Peace of Mind
For fleet owners, practicing safety is more than checking a box. Taking responsibility for their crew is a priority, especially in high-risk environments like construction zones, utility corridors, or oil and gas sites. That’s why the 114SD Plus’s design makes safety part of the truck’s DNA.
With Detroit Connect®, fleet owners get real-time visibility into vehicle health and driver activity. The Detroit Connect Portal shows active fault codes, trends, and maintenance needs, helping teams schedule repairs proactively instead of reacting to breakdowns. And if a fault occurs on the road, a Virtual Technician® analyzes it within minutes so managers know whether a truck can keep working or needs immediate service.
Fleet owners can also get insight into where the trucks are and when they enter or exit specific jobsites with location tools like Track & Trace and customizable geofences. This is useful for both safety and operational oversight of the crew. When the truck’s safety systems are enacted, detailed data helps clarify what happened during lane-departure warnings or other critical moments, making coaching and follow-up easier. And for added safety awareness, the optional Safety Plus package alerts managers if any safety systems are disabled or not transmitting.
For fleet owners, that clarity and control translates to fewer surprises, better-informed decisions, and the confidence that the 114SD Plus is working to protect both their crew and their investment.
