John Penn Named Overdrive Magazine’s 2025 Driver of the Year
Freightliner Team Run Smart
What does it take to be named Overdrive Magazine’s Driver of the Year? Team Run Smart Pro John Penn shares what the recognition means to him and reflects on the experiences, relationships and miles that have shaped his career.
Hey everyone, John Penn here.
With 25 years in the trucking industry, I’ve spent most of that time doing what a lot of drivers do: running loads, watching costs, and carrying out my plans for the long haul. Being named Overdrive Magazine’s 2025 Driver of the Year is an achievement I’m super proud of, and I’m excited to share the experience with you all.
What Goes Into an Award Like This
Overdrive’s Driver of the Year nominees are a group of owner-operators who run strong businesses, operate with professionalism, and make a lasting impact on the industry. To be recognized among that group means a lot, and being named the winner is an honor. It reflects the hard work, smart decisions, quality equipment, and meaningful partnerships that I’ve built over the years.
When I think about why I was selected, two things really stand out. First, I’ve committed to running modern equipment. Second, I stay focused on keeping operating costs low.
Those two go hand in hand, and Freightliner® has been a big part of my ability to do both. Freightliner’s improvements really help me stay ahead of the game, because fuel mileage, maintenance, and uptime all add up over time. I’ve focused on understanding where those efficiencies come from and how to apply them consistently. That attention to detail is a key reason I was considered for this award.
The Days at MATS I Won't Forget

Receiving the award brought me to the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, and that turned into one of those experiences that leaves a lasting impression. I spent time walking the exhibits, seeing what’s new, and talking with folks across the industry. There’s always something to learn at MATS, no matter how long you’ve been doing this.
What stood out this time was the number of conversations, both planned and unexpected. I had the chance to sit down with people I’ve listened to for years, including interviews with Partners in Business and Red Eye Radio. We talked through topics like what’s working for owner-operators right now, where costs can be controlled, and lessons that only come from time on the road.
There were also moments that reminded me just how connected this industry truly is. At one booth, I was handed a model truck that’s an exact replica of my Freightliner Cascadia®. It was completely unexpected and genuinely meaningful. While it may seem like a small gesture, it reflects the deep sense of pride we all share in the equipment we run.

Outside the show floor, the experience was just as valuable with dinners, conversations, and meeting people I’d never crossed paths with before. Those relationships are a big part of what keeps this industry moving forward. Because at the end of the day, we’re all working to run successful businesses while navigating many of the same challenges.
The Brands Behind My Business
A big part of the success I’ve had has come from the truck I’m in.
I’ve been running Freightliner Cascadias for years, and I’ve seen how they’ve evolved alongside my own operation. My Cascadia has surpassed 200,000 miles, demonstrating the kind of reliability that drives uptime. I always say, “It’s not the breakdown that costs you. It’s the downtime.”

I’m also paying close attention to the Fifth Generation Cascadia. Features like the MirrorCam System, a digital dash display, and aerodynamic improvements like the Max Aero Bumper and wheel well closeouts are the kinds of changes that drive real efficiency. A lot of the drivers I talked to at MATS are excited about that as well.
Day to day, I rely on the DT12® automated manual transmission. It’s easy to forget how much it’s doing until you talk to someone still running a manual. Whether I’m climbing hills or working through shifts, it’s handling gear changes and engine performance seamlessly in the background. Beyond the truck itself, the Freightliner dealer network is a key part of the support system. Maintenance is straightforward, and when something comes up, it gets handled quickly to keep everything moving.
At the end of the day, that support is why I’ve been able to run the way I have and be recognized like this. It’s also why I’m empowered to spread that support to other drivers, too.
Sharing What You Learn Along the Way
For me, one of the most meaningful aspects of all this is what extends beyond my own truck.
I spend a lot of time connecting with other owner-operators. Sometimes, that’s a quick call. Other times, it’s a three-hour conversation. Either way, my goal is to make it count by sharing what’s working, identifying opportunities to improve, and helping others get more out of their operation. That’s something I’ve come to value more with each passing year.
Whether it’s fuel strategy, equipment decisions, or cost management, my experience is best utilized when it’s extended beyond myself. If even one person can take something from my advice and apply it to strengthen their business, that’s time well spent.
Looking Ahead
Being named Overdrive’s Driver of the Year in my 25th year is an honor I’ll never forget. More than anything, it reinforces what’s gotten me here in the first place.
Build relationships. Run equipment that supports the business. Stay focused on the numbers. Share what you know. That mindset has served me well, and it’s one I plan to continue building on.
